La galerie Wilder & Davis a le plaisir de présenter l’exposition des oeuvres de Carrie Chisholm, “The Lucky Country”, du 30 juillet au 22 octobre 2010. Inspirée par la principale compétition hippique d’Australie, la Melbourne Cup à laquelle elle a assistée, l’artiste torontoise propose une vision satirique du matérialisme grandissant dans nos sociétés.

Carrie Chisholm réinterprète la photographie d’actualité et la photographie personnelle, afin d’explorer les façons de mettre en scène l’illusion. Elle commence par tracer uniquement les contours, des lignes fluides et expressives, pour ensuite appliquer des couches d’émail acrylique afin d’y déformer et dissoudre ses sujets et objets. L’artiste dessine en regardant uniquement la photo de son sujet, sans regarder sa main. Cette technique qui la caractérise semble libérer l’image de son état statique. Ensuite, elle rassemble les différentes parties du visage et du corps avant d’appliquer méticuleusement l’acrylique. La représentation du sujet en est radicalement altérée, et par rapport à la photographie originale, on ne retient que l’allure.

Carrie Chisholm est une artiste multimedia plusieurs fois primée qui a obtenu un dipôme du Ontario College of Art and Design en 1998. Elle a par la suite participé au Florence Exchange Program de l’OCAD, été stagiaire à la Peggy Guggenheim Collection à Venise en Italie, et a obtenu son diplôme de maîtrise à la RMIT University de Melbourne en Australie en 2006. Elle est depuis devenue un membre actif du comité de programmation de la PARCA Biennale qui organise des expositions à New York pour des artistes canadiens. Parmi ses tâches d’ambassadrice culturelle non officielle de Toronto, Carrie Chisholm travaille sur le projet « Couriers of Culture » qui rassemble nombreuses anecdotes d’artistes canadiens, dans le but de faire connaître leurs initiatives à l’étranger.

From July 30 to October 22, 2010, Wilder & Davis Gallery is pleased to present, “The Lucky Country” by Toronto-based visual artist, Carrie Chisholm. Inspired by a visit to the Melbourne Cup, a major annual horse race in Australia, Chisholm`s “The Lucky Country” is a satirical view of the growing materialism in society.

By reinterpreting media-based and personal photography, Carrie Chisholm explores the facets of staging illusion. Using blind contour drawing to create fluid and expressive lines, Chisholm takes this artistic practice one step further and applies layers of acrylic glazes to distort and dissolve her subject matter. With only a photo reference to look at, and without watching her drawing hand, Chisholm’s signature technique liberates the image from its static perfection, reassembling facial and body parts before carefully treating the result with acrylic paint. The result is a radically altered view of the subject matter in which the spirit of the original photograph is retained just enough to preserve its lure.

Carrie Chisholm is an award winning mixed media artist who graduated in 1998 from the Ontario College of Art and Design, participated in OCAD’s Florence Exchange Program, interned at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, Italy. Since completing her Master’s degree at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia in 2006, Carrie has become an active member of the PARCA Biennale programming committee, which arranges exhibitions of Canadian artists in New York City. Her other duties as Toronto’s unofficial cultural ambassador include developing a project called ‘Couriers of Culture’, which collects stories from Canadian artists in an effort to raise awareness of their initiatives abroad.
